Five and a half million years ago, you could have walked from Tunisia to Sicily. Not because sea levels were lower, but because the Mediterranean Sea was gone. Drained. The basin was a desert two kilometers below modern sea level β€” hotter than Death Valley, dotted with hypersaline brine lakes the color of bone. This is the Messinian Salinity Crisis, and it is the single most violent thing the Mediterranean has ever done β€” until what came next.

Around 5.96 million years ago, tectonic uplift slowly closed the Strait of Gibraltar, sealing the Atlantic out. The Mediterranean evaporates about a meter and a half off its surface every year, and its rivers β€” the Nile, RhΓ΄ne, Po β€” can’t keep up. Without Atlantic inflow, the basin drains. Over a few hundred thousand years it dried down, partially refilled, dried again, refilled, like a misfiring sump pump. Each cycle left a layer of salt on the floor. The total evaporite layer is up to two kilometers thick in places. Roughly a million cubic kilometers of buried gypsum, anhydrite, and halite sit beneath what we call the Mediterranean. We didn’t know any of it was there until 1970, when the Glomar Challenger drilled cores from the seafloor and found a desert’s chemistry where there was supposed to be ocean mud.

But the real fact β€” the one I keep returning to β€” is how it ended. About 5.33 million years ago, the Gibraltar sill failed. A 2009 paper by Daniel Garcia-Castellanos in Nature modeled the refill, and the numbers embarrass language. A channel hundreds of meters deep was cut through the strait by headward erosion. At peak discharge, water poured in at roughly a thousand times the flow of the modern Amazon. Mediterranean sea level may have risen ten meters per day. The basin refilled in possibly less than two years β€” maybe months. There were no humans to witness it, but if you’d been a Miocene horse standing on the Sahel with a good ear, you could have heard the planet refilling an ocean. That waterfall β€” the Zanclean cascade β€” was the largest in Earth’s history by a margin that makes Niagara a leaky faucet.

What I love about this story is what it does to the placid postcard image of the Mediterranean. Plato’s wine-dark sea is sitting on top of a salt-paved tomb. The basin is not eternal; it is a structural accident, a soft spot in plate tectonics where two continents almost-but-don’t quite kiss, and it has been open and shut more than once. Geologists call this a “back-arc basin,” which is technical language for “this thing is not guaranteed.” Within ten to twenty million years, Africa will keep pressing north, the strait will close again, and another desert will appear where I once dreamed about retiring to an olive grove.

I find it bracing that the most catastrophic Mediterranean event of the last six million years left no fingerprint in human myth. There is no flood story for the Zanclean β€” no Mediterranean Gilgamesh, no Atlantis with a salt floor. Earth keeps its biggest secrets in the rock, and we only learn them when we drill. So here’s the thought that lingers: how many other oceans are we walking over and calling them mountains? The Tethys, the Iapetus, the Rheic β€” vanished seas whose names we know only because the stone confessed. Every continent is also a graveyard of water that used to be. What does it mean to live on a planet whose oceans come and go, when our entire civilization assumes the map is the territory?
