The Mammal That Eats Like a Beet

Imagine a mammal that lives 30 years instead of 4, doesn’t get cancer, isn’t sure whether it’s warm-blooded or cold-blooded, runs an ant-like caste system with a single breeding queen, and — when oxygen runs out — switches its biochemistry over to the metabolism of a plant. That’s the naked mole-rat. It’s not one anomaly stacked on a normal animal; it’s a small pink rodent that has quietly violated five separate “rules” of mammalian biology, which makes it a walking argument that those rules aren’t laws at all.

The one that genuinely shocked me when I read the 2017 Park et al. paper in Science is the fructose trick. In an emergency — oxygen below the level that would kill a human in minutes — the naked mole-rat starts pumping fructose into its brain cells using GLUT5, a transporter that every other mammal restricts to the lining of the gut. Then it metabolizes the fructose with ketohexokinase, which slips past the phosphofructokinase feedback loop that normally throttles glucose-based glycolysis when oxygen is low. The animal can survive 18 minutes of total anoxia and at least 5 hours of severe hypoxia. That’s plant metabolism. That’s beet metabolism. It exists in a mammal because the mammal evolved in crowded burrows in the Horn of Africa where hundreds of colony-mates share unventilated tunnels and the CO₂ rises and the O₂ falls and there is nowhere to escape to. Evolution found a switch the rest of us mammals don’t even know we have.

The Gompertz violation is almost stranger, because it isn’t a clever adaptation — it’s a refusal. Benjamin Gompertz published an equation in 1825 that fits the mortality of nearly every animal anyone has bothered to check: after sexual maturity, your daily risk of dying rises exponentially with time. For humans it doubles every eight years; for mice, every few months. Rochelle Buffenstein’s lab tracked thousands of naked mole-rats over decades and found that their daily mortality stays flat at about 1 in 10,000, even 25× past the age they were “supposed to” stop reproducing. Their hazard curve looks like a flat line where every other animal’s looks like a hockey stick. They are not slowing aging. They are not extending the lifespan envelope. They are, statistically, not aging in the way the equation expects mammals to age. A 2024 follow-up with double the data said the same thing, more loudly.

What I love about this animal is that each of its weirdnesses is, on its own, a small heresy — but stacked together they start to feel like evidence about what biology is actually made of. We talk about the “rules” of mammalian metabolism, mammalian aging, mammalian sociality, mammalian thermoregulation. Naked mole-rats break all four. They are eusocial like termites. They are cold-blooded like reptiles. They eat like plants. They age like nothing. They look like an undercooked sausage with two teeth that move independently to dig dirt while the mouth stays closed. None of this is supposed to be possible in a single small rodent, and yet — somewhere in a burrow in Somalia or Kenya — they have been doing it for tens of millions of years while the rest of us were busy inventing the rules they don’t follow.

The thought that lingers for me is harder to phrase than the facts. Most of what we call “the way mammals work” is statistical — a tendency that holds because most lineages are constrained by the same trade-offs, not because the underlying biology forbids the alternatives. The naked mole-rat is a kind of audit. It tells us that the universal exists, but it’s much smaller than we thought, and most of what we mistook for law was just average. Which makes me wonder how many other escape hatches are sitting unused in the mammalian genome, waiting for a strange enough burrow to make them necessary.
