I went looking for a topic I’d never touched and landed in a place I cannot stop thinking about: the deep painted caves of France and northern Spain β Niaux, Le Portel, Lascaux, Font-de-Gaume, La Pasiega β and the claim that the bison and horses and aurochs are not painted anywhere on the walls. They are painted where the cave sings. In 1988, a French musicologist named IΓ©gor Reznikoff dragged Michel Dauvois into a cave and started humming. Not metaphorically. Actually humming, sliding pitches across the wall, listening for where the rock answered back. He mapped the resonant zones β the places where a low voice would unfold into three or four seconds of reverberation, or fire back a clean discrete echo β and then he overlaid the map of the paintings. At Niaux, ninety percent of the images sit inside the resonant zones. At Le Portel and the Grande Grotte d’Arcy-sur-Cure, about eighty. The dull, dead, acoustically inert stretches of cave are nearly empty.
What stops me cold is the species-specific version of the claim. In some passages, the echo is not just long β it’s percussive. A hand-clap or a foot-stomp comes back as a stuttered rattle of pulses. And that is precisely where the hoofed animals are: bison, horse, deer, aurochs. The chambers that drum like hooves contain the things that have hooves. In other bends β narrower, more nasal in their resonance β humming reportedly produces lowing, mooing, grunting tones, and those are the bends where the matching animal faces stare back from the wall. If this is real, then Paleolithic cave art is not primarily a visual practice. It is the visible residue of a sonic one. Someone walked into a black cave thirty thousand years ago carrying a fat-lamp and a voice, and chose the canvas by listening.
I want to be honest about my skepticism, because this is exactly the kind of finding that flatters us into believing it before we’ve earned it. Trevor Cox and the Durham archaeoacoustics group ran the rigorous version of this in 2017 β proper impulse-response measurements, calibrated microphones, five Cantabrian caves β and they did find a statistical correlation between motif density and acoustic response. But they wrote the sentence I respect them for: this is not unambiguous evidence of intentional sonic selection. Caves are not uniform. Resonant chambers tend to be the wider, flatter ones β which are also the easier ones to stand in, light, and paint. The porous walls of the dead zones may simply have lost their pigment to ten thousand years of water. The animals might cluster in the singing chambers because the singing chambers are the paintable chambers, not because anyone was singing.
And yet. The percussive-echo-equals-hoofed-animal pattern is the part I cannot dissolve into a confounder. Acoustic affordance and visual affordance can both prefer wide rooms β fine. But why would a wider room preferentially echo like a stampede and preferentially be painted with the things that stampede? Either that’s an extraordinary coincidence, or the people who went down there with their lamps were doing something that we, in our visually-overdeveloped modernity, are no longer equipped to recognize. I keep imagining the moment of method: a small group, deep, the lamp throwing a wobble of shadow, someone humming low and listening, and the cave answering in a particular voice, and the painter saying here, this one is a bison, this is where it lives. The wall is not the artwork. The wall is the score’s location marker. The artwork was the sound β which has, of course, evaporated, leaving only the staff-paper of pigment behind.
What I find genuinely destabilizing is what this implies about forgetting. We assume art history is a chain of additions β more techniques, more materials, more dimensions. But if Reznikoff is even half right, then the very first art we know about was multimodal in a way that we, with all our museums and headphones, can no longer perform. We’ve kept the pictures. We lost the songs. We didn’t even know there were songs to lose. How many other practices in the human record are we reading as silent objects when they were originally instruments β and how would we tell the difference, when the only thing left is the part that didn’t move?
