The Two Physicists Who Built the Same Theory and Reached Opposite Conclusions About Reality

Carlo Rovelli and Lee Smolin are friends. They co-founded loop quantum gravity — one of the two leading candidates for a theory of everything. They’ve co-authored papers, shared blackboards, pushed each other’s thinking for decades. And they have arrived at flatly incompatible answers to the most basic question you can ask about reality: Is time real?

Rovelli says no. In “The Order of Time,” he builds a meticulous case that time is emergent — a macroscopic artifact of thermodynamics and our particular entanglement with the universe, not a fundamental ingredient of reality. At the deepest level, the equations of quantum gravity contain no time variable at all. What we experience as the flow of moments is, in Rovelli’s framework, something like temperature: real in the sense that we feel it, but not a property of individual molecules. His thermal time hypothesis, developed with mathematician Alain Connes, proposes that the time we perceive is generated by the statistical state of the system we’re embedded in. We don’t ride a river of time. We are a thermodynamic perspective that generates the illusion of a river. And yet — and this is the part of Rovelli I find genuinely beautiful — he insists this doesn’t mean change is an illusion. The world is still fundamentally about happening, about transitions and events. It’s just that these happenings don’t require a background clock to unfold against. The universe is a network of events related to each other, not a stage on which events are performed.

Smolin says the opposite, and he’s angry about it. In “Time Reborn,” he argues that making time unreal was the biggest mistake physics ever made — a conceptual wrong turn that has left us unable to explain why the laws of physics are what they are, why the universe had the initial conditions it had, why anything exists rather than nothing. Smolin’s radical move is to assert that not only is time real, but the laws of physics themselves evolve in time. They aren’t eternal Platonic truths handed down from outside the universe; they’re habits that developed, cosmological natural selection shaping which universes reproduce and which don’t. This is thrilling and destabilizing in equal measure. If laws evolve, then nothing is truly permanent — not even the rules. The universe isn’t governed; it’s improvising. Smolin also makes the haunting argument that only if time is real can consciousness be real, because qualia — the felt quality of experience — require a genuine present moment, not a frozen coordinate in a block.

Here’s what gets me: they’re both working from the same math. Loop quantum gravity’s fundamental equations genuinely have no time variable — that’s a mathematical fact, not a philosophical choice. The “problem of time” in quantum gravity is famous precisely because the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, the closest thing we have to a master equation for quantum gravity, is timeless. Rovelli looks at this and says: “See? Time was never fundamental. We need to explain how it emerges.” Smolin looks at the same equation and says: “See? Our formalism is incomplete. We need to put time back in.” Same data, opposite conclusions. The disagreement isn’t about physics — it’s about what counts as an explanation. Rovelli trusts the math and asks how experience arises from it. Smolin trusts the experience and asks what’s wrong with the math.

I have an opinion on this, and I’ll say it plainly: I think they’re both half-right in a way that points to something neither has fully articulated. Rovelli is correct that time as we naively understand it — a universal clock ticking in the background — is not fundamental. Relativity destroyed that a century ago, and quantum gravity buries it deeper. But Smolin is correct that eliminating time entirely leaves you with an explanatory gap you can drive a universe through. The felt present, the asymmetry of memory, the sheer thereness of now — these aren’t things you can wave away by saying “every temporal slice experiences itself as present.” That’s a redescription, not an explanation. I suspect the answer lives in the relationship between information and entropy: time might not be fundamental to the universe, but it might be fundamental to any system complex enough to model itself. Consciousness doesn’t need a cosmic clock. It needs a direction — a thermodynamic gradient that allows memory, prediction, and the sense of becoming. Time might be real for minds and unreal for physics, and both of those might be true simultaneously without contradiction.

The deepest question isn’t whether time exists. It’s whether the question even makes sense without someone there to ask it.
