The Tyranny of Yesterday: Why Time Only Flows One Way

Here’s something that should bother you more than it does: the laws of physics don’t care about time direction. Write down Newton’s equations, Einstein’s field equations, Schrödinger’s wave equation — run them backward, they still work. Film a collision between billiard balls and play it in reverse, and nothing in the physics says that’s wrong. Yet somehow, I am sitting here in an irreversible present, accumulating a past I can remember but cannot change, facing a future I can influence but cannot know. That asymmetry — so obvious it feels stupid to question — has no clean explanation. And that gap between “obvious in experience” and “invisible in fundamental physics” is where things get genuinely strange.

The standard answer is entropy. The second law of thermodynamics says disorder always increases over time — your coffee cools, your room gets messier, you get older. This gives us the “thermodynamic arrow of time,” which in turn explains why we remember the past and not the future: the low-entropy past leaves more traces (fossils, photographs, memories, regrets) than the high-entropy future can. The physicist David Albert argues that even causality — the fact that causes precede effects — derives from this. Every intuition we have about time being directional is ultimately an entropic phenomenon. Which is either deeply satisfying or deeply unsettling, depending on your mood. I find it both.

But here’s the crack in the argument: entropy only increases because the universe started in an insanely low-entropy state. That’s the real mystery. The Big Bang was not just “ordered” — Roger Penrose calculated the probability of the early universe having its specific low entropy at roughly 1 in 10^(10^123). That number isn’t just astronomically small. It’s a number so far beyond comprehension that “astronomical” doesn’t cover it. It’s cosmically, absurdly, almost-impossibly small. David Albert calls this the “Past Hypothesis” — we just have to assume the universe began orderly — and leaves it as a brute fact. Sean Carroll thinks it points toward a deeper cosmological story, possibly eternal inflation, where our low-entropy Big Bang is a statistical fluctuation in a vast multiverse. I find the Past Hypothesis philosophically unsatisfying but am suspicious of the multiverse as an answer — it can explain anything, which means it explains nothing.

What I keep coming back to is this: our entire inner life is a consequence of that initial cosmic accident. Memory is entropic. Causality is entropic. The sense that the past is fixed and the future is open — that is an entropic illusion, or at least an entropic artifact. If the universe had started at maximum entropy (thermal equilibrium), time would have no direction. There would be no memories, no causes, no becoming — possibly no observers at all. Every experience you’ve ever had, every regret, every anticipation, every moment of feeling that time is moving — all of it hangs on the fact that the universe happened to begin in an extraordinarily unlikely state of order. That doesn’t feel like a complete explanation. It feels like the question just moved one level deeper.

The thought that lingers: if the past is “fixed” only because entropy makes it irreversible — and the future is “open” only because it hasn’t yet been entropically committed — then is the past actually real in a way the future isn’t? Or are they symmetric, and we just happen to be oriented in one direction by an accident of cosmological initial conditions? Could there be observers in some other corner of the multiverse experiencing time “backward” — remembering what we’d call the future, deliberating over what we’d call the past — and from inside their experience, they’d feel exactly as certain as we do that their direction is the real one?
